City University of Hong Kong

BArch Year 4

Tutor: Dr. Stefan Krakhofer

Location: Hok Tsui, Hong Kong

This project is drived from a master plan of a artist village, that collaborated with Ahamed Imba Junaid. It proposed using a new route connecting exhibition space, studio and open space with the old village together. The planning focused on encouraging visual connectivity and promoting the light and shadow artworks.

The theme of the master plan is ‘A Journey through Hok Tsui’. It is not just an architectural expression or a title but rather a meaning of philosophy. It basically aims to introduce a new contemporary purpose, serving as an artist village and revitalize the old traditional Hok Tsui village where containing lots of collective memories and craftsmanship. The whole master plan would be able to enhance both the modern and traditional values of art.

Visual imagery is adopted as main driver for the design as it is vital for the visitors as well as artists for their adaptation. It started from a main circulation pathway from existing entrance to the old historical building by generating a longest visual line from map. Then, places for art works are located at the highest visual connectivity points which would act as attraction points to move visitors further go inside exploring the modern and traditional art. Buildings are then plugged behind those points and triangular based form is designed to strengthen the visual perspective during going inside.

The building design is than attempted to strengthen the human perspective and emphasise the relevance between light and shadow, bright and dark experience, through different journey of dead-end pathway where framed views of Hok Tsui with various environments. It aimed to address the negligence of the natural beauty of Hok Tsui and its relations with the village and the access
